The One Room Challenge Reveal: A Guest Room That Feels Like a Retreat

Because real life doesn’t pause for the pretty things—and that’s okay.

After eight weeks of design plans, paint samples, and a whole lot of real-life juggling, my One Room Challenge guest room is finally done. And let me tell you, it’s giving cozy, calm, and curated—all the things I envisioned when I first set out on this transformation.

The goal was to create a guest space that felt intentional and immersive, a retreat for friends and family that reflected my love of rich textures, layered lighting, and soul-filled design. Looking at the finished room now—the soft glow from the sconces, the velvet green bed, the curated books and art—I’m proud to say: mission accomplished.

But here’s what you didn’t see.

Behind the scenes, life was still moving full speed. I wanted to devote all my energy and budget to this space, to get lost in the creative process without distractions. But the reality? I was still clocking in for my 9 to 5, staying active with my volunteer work, cleaning up after life’s daily messes, and yep—folding way too much laundry. Some days, I could only tackle one corner of the room. Other days, I had to pause altogether. But I kept showing up, piece by piece, moment by moment.

And somehow, that made it more meaningful.

The final design is a reflection of balance. The rich green tones wrap the room in warmth, the layered lighting brings softness, and the mix of patterns—like the statement lumbar pillow and the jungle-inspired art—adds just the right touch of personality. I even snuck in a bit of whimsy with sculptural decor pieces and coffee table books that speak to my love of storytelling.

My favorite corner? The cozy seating nook with two textured chairs, playful pillows, and a styled side table that’s ready for a candle, a cocktail, or a quiet moment with a good book. It’s a small space, but it holds so much.

This One Room Challenge wasn’t just about the before and after. It was about designing through the chaos, staying creative in the cracks of my day, and remembering that even when time and energy feel scarce, beauty can still bloom.

Thank you for following along this journey with me. Your encouragement truly kept me going on the days I felt behind. I hope this space inspires you to carve out something beautiful—whatever your pace may be.

With love,

Gabrielle
